All aboard the oldest steam train in South Africa on 2 November 2014! Step back in time as you get settled in your vintage wooden-bodied coaches (dating 1922 – 1938), pulled by a steam engine, and enjoy a scenic ride along the tracks to Vredenheim – whose own history dates all the way back to 1691 – in the Stellenbosch winelands.
That unmistakable whistle and “whoosh” of steam will signal your arrival at the Vlottenburg station, situated right next to Vredenheim’s own farm. After disembarking, you’ll enjoy a short guided walk through our sprawling fields, which are home to a variety of game including zebra, ostrich, wildebeest, bontebok and gemsbok.
All that travelling is thirsty work, so you’ll be greeted with a tasting of our wines in the Tasting Room. Our own red and white grape juice will be on offer for kiddies and those who opt for a non-alcoholic option.
Afterwards, it’s time to make your way through our expansive gardens and along the dam to our Big Cats Park, where you’ll meet the Bengal tigers, leopard, cheetah, caracal and white lions that call Vredenheim’s wildlife sanctuary their home. From the King of the Jungle to the fastest land animal on earth, you’ll have the unique opportunity to view these magnificent creatures up close and to learn more about them from our expert guides. Don’t forget to bring your cameras along for this unforgettable experience.
It’s then on to Restaurant Barrique for a scrumptious lunch: An oasis of cuisine in the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands, loved for its South African a la carte menu. We highly recommend a stroll through the gardens (weather permitting) once you’ve finished your delicious lunch.
Once you’ve sipped, viewed and tasted the very best that Vredenheim has to offer, it’ll be time to board the train once again and enjoy the sunset steam trip back home. A once-in-a-lifetime experience for the whole family to enjoy. Places are limited, so book now to avoid disappointment.
